Connecting rod assembly
Problem & Challenge
Connecting rod assemblies of internal combustion engines - especially in the power generation sector - are subject to enormous structural mechanical and dynamic loads due to continuous increases in power. At the same time, they are at their absolute limit in terms of strength due to their minimised mass.
Targets & Workflow
Ensuring the functional capability of the connecting rod assembly by means of a strength verification. This included, among other things, the global evaluation of the overall structure of the connecting rod as a result of alternating gas and mass force, bending and transverse force in the gearing area, as well as buckling or bulging in the swivel and longitudinal directions. The local contact areas in the threads of the connecting rod screws, in the gearing area and in the bearing shells were also evaluated with non-linear sub-models and any ovalities that occurred were documented.
Results & Customer Benefits
By means of structural-mechanical analyses, we have provided the necessary proof of strength for several series in corresponding optimisation loops. This resulted in relevant competitive advantages due to a production-optimised structure and, as a consequence, significantly reduced manufacturing costs.
